About this site
Pragmatic Homeschooling is an independent publication about understanding and using technology as a parent. It's primarily for parents who take the lead in their kid's education, but it's also for parents who just want to understand how technology impacts kids in and out of the classroom. Socialization, learning, playing, and creating have all been dramatically impacted by recent technology, but people - especially mindful parents - have the opportunity to influence how positive or negative that impact is. For more on this philosophy, see Pragmatic Homeschooling's position on AI and screens for kids.
About the author
I'm Lorien, a mom with a tween (appearing as "kiddo" in my writing) who has been homeschooled on and off since 3rd grade. I'm a former professional software and process nerd with 25 years wrangling people and programs for business and higher education. My mom is my inspiration, an exceptional educator for over 30 years who is never afraid to create, adapt, and innovate in her classroom and in life. Kiddo was diagnosed with ADHD and autism while in elementary school, and I was diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood. Our homeschooling goals are always evolving, but right now we're experimenting with the latest apps to try and make learning more engaging and effective (and teaching more efficient). I also try to keep up with what's unfolding in kiddo's world as she forges her identity and community in a profoundly more connected world than I grew up in. Finally, I write about what we're learning - both her and me - as we remain committed to curiosity and openness.
